Known as the Mushroom of Immortality, reishi has a long history of use in Traditional Chinese Medicine as well as Japanese and Korean medicine. Although records reporting medicinal use date back 2,000 years, many believe that reishi mushroom has been used for its phenomenally healing and therapeutic qualities for even longer! Reishi is remarkably beneficial for nearly every part of the human body, particularly the circulatory, immune, respiratory, endocrine, nervous, reproductive and digestive systems. With its sweet, bitter, meaty, salty and warming tastes & energies, Reishi is known to be adaptogenic, antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, anti-allergy, antibacterial, antifungal, antihistamine, antiviral, anti-tumor, antitussive, cardiotonic, blood-sugar balancer, expectorant, hypotensive, hepatoprotective, immunostimulant, immunomodulator, longevity tonic, and nervine. Various species of reishi grow throughout Asia, Europe, North America and in the Amazon rainforest. Most commonly, reishi is found on dead or dying eastern hemolocks (Tsuga candensis), spruce and fir trees. In the Northeast US, reishi may be discovered growing on decaying deciduous trees, such as maple, oak, elm, willow, magnolia and locust. Here on Cape Cod, I typically locate reishi growing on dead or declining oak trees.

Play around with adding a slice into any tea of your choosing. Simmer for at least 15-45 minutes. Check out my Reflections Blog for Adaptogen Chai Recipes. Enjoy slices of reishi in soups, broths, beans, and stews. To make a very strong tea decoction, add 1-2 oz. dried slices of mushroom to 32 oz. water, slowly decoct for 1-2 hours or until water is reduced by ½ (16 oz. left for consumption). Feel welcome to sweeten or mix with other herb teas.
A Double Extract (combination of alcohol extract and strong tea decoction) method is the best way to create a tincture. Do your research before making or reach out for more information.
